Week 12- Social & Ethical Issues

Lecture-

Week 12's lecture focused on the characteristics of copyright and plagiarism on the Internet and being able have privacy in some areas. Intellectual property(IP) has no restriction to what is on the Internet. This is the problem when plagiarism creeps in and ignores the rights to copyright and the system is abused and ignored. When dealing with copyright some things we learnt were to always acknowledge the work of others. always refer to the reference guide to ensure that you reference correctly.

Another huge issue discussed was the lack of privacy on the web. The Internet leaves digital trails which shows where a person has been on the Internet. The issue with freedom vs. protection of information, and the rights of individuals and/or organisations.

This was a very informational heavy lecture with lots of discussion and talk about the issues.

Many undergraduate students are unsure with the rules of copyright and what is necessary for the uni life. Here are lists of the information sheet that are relevant to undergraduate students.

1. Copyright protects documented/ textual material - i.e. journals, books, websites, and articles.

2. Most things on the net are copyrighted - this does not make them free. As students, we often think that material on the net is free to use, but it is actually under copyright and you are breaking the law if you do.

3. Copyright does not protect information that is stored or thought of in the head. e.g. an idea, a concept.

4. Anyone that wishes to use material that is under copyright cannot unless they seek and receive permission from the author or artist of suggested material.

5. Protects the works of artist and musical students and also the department of film and broadcast.

‘Warez Leader Sentenced to 46 Months’ was the article of the case of a man called John Sankus Jr. The story is about Mr. John Sankus Jr. and his trail that got him up to 46 months behind bars after being found guilty for scheming to infringing the criminal copyright laws. John was the leader a large international software piracy company on the internet. Along side john is prison was a worker of the company which was sentenced to 33 months. These two sentences became the biggest imprisonment charges for crimes via the internet.

The group was called Drink of Die and was known as a online software piracy company. The company then cracked big software companies such as Microsoft and adobe releasing it on the internet to distribute and be used by anyone. With the copyright defaulted in these companies, John and the team were able to illegally reproduce the other companies software to anyone.

Week 11- Building Knowledge

Lecture -

In the lecture we learnt about the relationship between data, information and knowledge. The relationship between the three all links up with data building into information which then minded into knowledge. This helps when you find data and information to back up a theory or question, establishing a greater knowledge to the topic in context. papers, press releases and marketing strategies are examples of knowledge put together with the help of data and information being useful to that topic.

5. Train transport- to see how they can make traveling more comfortable and easier.

This article describes the process of transferring data to wisdom, and the different steps involved in between the two. It goes through the definitions of data, information, knowledge, wisdom and understanding as well as showing a diagram of what is involved in this process. I found the information in this article to be very informative and easy to understand.
Information Literacy
This website contains a few different quizzes aimed at testing the user’s knowledge of the information presented. Before commencing the quizzes, there is also links to different pages with information to help with successful completion of the quizzes. The information in these pages include research strategies, how to produce and organise knowledge as well as information on how to reference correctly and respecting copyrights.
Data, Information & Knowledge
This article gives the definitions of datum, information and knowledge and talks about the importance of creating information from data and then passing in on as knowledge. Data, without being information is simply stats and facts and doesn’t hold any true meaning. Once information is created from data, you can learn from this information, which in turn becomes knowledge.

Week 10 - Online Libraries & Databases

Lecture - This lecture consisted of two different parts. Part one was about online libraries which discussed about why use online libraries and different types of libraries online. Firstly the great thing about using a online library is that its convenient and accessible 24/7. Its open to much more current sources then a normal library. The types of libraries online range from online journals to musical and artwork libraries.
Part two focused on the online databases which information retrieved online placed in data fields characterised into their area. The great thing about online libraries and databases are that they are extremely useful sources of information. many available subscription and others free. They are always up to date and informative.

1. "Information resources" - The subheading allows you to enter many other functions within this web page. These include the Library Catalogue, Online Databases and Internet Search Tools.

2. "Information About" - This heading allows students to look and learn about the functions at the ECU Library.

3. "Information for Students" - This link allows all students to explore all they need to know about the libraries schedule. From trading hours of the library to where on the campus the library is.

4. "Search the Catalogue" – This gives the option of searching any author, publisher, book and even lecture to do with your subject or unit.

5. "Services" - Some services include Multimedia Services and Document.

6. "Resources For" - Subheadings include Students, Researches, Academic Staff, External/offshore Students, Community and Alumni.

7. "Loan Services" - This link shows and tells students the steps of taking and bringing back books.

After accessing the Library homepage, we were asked to access www.medlineplus.com and spend time looking at articles about health and drugs.
This website would give such service to many. This website is a search engine for different health and drug issues. Anyone that has a disease or knows someone with a drug supplement problem could use this website to find out the reasons and causes to these problems.

Week 9- Using search engines

Lecture -
In the lecture we discussed what are search engines and their pro's and con's. A search engine is a web-based application that crawls the internet and using the textural information contained on them, meaning the website usually has indexed according to the keywords. The two main search engines are google and yahoo.
The issues and problems with search engines have are that too many results pop up.

Workshop -

We were also asked to go to www.monash.com/spidap and note four strategies that will help in structuring a good search.
Four strategies are:

Keep the search precise.
Use + - in the search to limit unnecessary information.
Using “ ” will help in narrowing what you want.
Putting certain words in characters will limit the search as words such as NOT will tell the search engine you do not want something.

The best way to search on a search engine is to only put in key words and leave out common words to try and be specific.

Week 8- Evaluation and Authentication

Lecture - This week we learnt the basic and steps to searching and finding quality information on the World-wide web. The phrase "fit-for-use" is commonly described as what is information quality. Fit-for-use implies that IQ (information quality) is relative and or is appropriate for one use. One context of the World-wide web is open protocols which is when virtually anyone can design and create a web content. Other areas are questions such as who publishes on the WWW ? why publishes publish on the WWW ? What is published on the WWW ?

We also learnt how to evaluate IQ on the WWW and determine the quality of the content on the WWW.

Workshop -

Week 8 we are discussing evaluation and authentication of web resources. We were asked to look at the following website and record several strategies.

Six points were:

1. Make sure you are in the right place. ( ask the question, are you using this website because its easy and fun; when really you should use it for the appropriate source of information you are seeking.)

2. When in doubt, doubt. (Always check how accurate the web page context is and examine assumptions.)

3. Consider the source. (A source will usually have the authors name. A good source will have some other form of information that indicates that this is the author and not some poor graded web page.)

4. Know what's happening. (Try to identify the reason the Web page was created in the first place.)

5. Look at details. (internal clues on a web page can determine a lot about a web page. Good spelling and grammar is a huge aspect to that.)

6. Distinguish Web pages from pages found on the Web. (Just a quick reminder that most web pages aren't from books or articles, but both articles and books can be found on the web.)

DETAIL AND DESIGN: The design was basic, but was detailed very well with all references visible and usable.

OVERALL WORTH: Very easy to follow and understand. would be great for information quality on the American cultural history throughout the 1960's.

Week 7- Using the WWW

Lecture

This weeks lecture we looked at the world wide web. We focused on some areas such as the Internet vs. the web, historical perspective of the web, defining the web, web protocols and web browsers/interface.

Internet Vs. The Web - When your on the web you are searching and viewing documents, pictures, sounds and video clips. The net is when your finding a computer and they connect with cables to each computer. The web connects with hyperlink texts.

Historical Perspective of the web - The web was developed and designed by Tim Berner-lee in 1989, The reason of designing the web was to have the facilitate research information.

Defining the Web- The web is a universal access point for gathering information stored on the computer with a gigantic network called the Internet.

The world wide web (also know as www) is a network of computers using TCP/IP to communicate to each other. TCP/IP stands for Transmission control protocol/ Internet protocol.

Using the web is simple with these steps to help you get the internet in your house. firstly you need a computer, followed with a modern(browser software), telephone line and those items with be the start of getting onto the the internet.

Looking at the domain, it looks as if the site is an organization site meaning it is probably authentic and will contain true information about Martin Luther King. I thought that I may find things such as a detailed information about his life, the move of Martin Luther King had on America, his childhood, and possibly comments by famous people about what a great person and how he changed America. The website sounds very much like it is a site dedicated to Martin Luther King, and his contributions to America.

When I went to the website, my first impressions were that the website is genuine and made to dedicate Martin Luther King. Looking further into the website I realized that it was a bogus website made as a big comic story. There were sexual remarks and comments targeting Martin Luther King and his behaviour which were false and dishonest.

1960 The prototypes 'ONLine Systems' (NLS) was created enabling the use of email, browsing and editing. The mouse was also invented.The search engine readings ran through how to improve searching strategies and different search engines to use in regards to the information a user is trying to gain.

This website gives information on the history of computer and the birth of the internet. It starts by talking about the humble beginnings of different inventions, starting with steam engines and different types of them used in the early days. It then goes on to discuss the invention of computers and how they were developed. It later discusses the forming of technology and the different stages it went through during development, as well as providing us with information on how the internet was formed and different parts of the WWW. I found this website to contain a lot of useful information that was presented in an appealing way to the reader.

Week 6- EndNote Libraries

Lecture-
The lecture introduced and discussed the university tool EndNote. EndNote is a program that helps sort out your referencing and distinguish a journal reference to a conference reference. Endnote is also know as reference manager and bibliography maker. A positive about EndNote is that it is integrated into MS Word. The reason the university encourages students to use EndNote is so that they can keep a track of a growing number of references. EndNote is able to reference in a number of styles and types of referencing. The main key points we learnt from the lecture was that don't except to 'get it' the first time you try EndNote, but to play around with it and get use to it over a period of time. Begin to use EndNote as a standalone application- this way you can keep a track of your references. Always back up (save) your library, not just on your desktop, but use a USB thumb drive or other forms of saving work. The use of EndNote will help simplify and customise your references instead of a bunch of cluttered mixed up references.

Workshop-
In the workshop we were asked to get straight into our workshop week six task. The task was to open up EndNote and follow the instructions to how to place some references in EndNote correctly. We were asked to copy 8 different references into EndNote and reference them according to the style or type that they were. We were asked to change the formatting to the ECU's Standard which was APA 5th. We were asked to refer to ECU referencing guide booklet to identify what each style of reference was. A reference with a volume and issue number were usually a journal or magazine article. Most of the references consisted of journal and magazine articles. We were heavily instructed to back up our referencing work on the thumb drive. This workshop really equips you with the tools on how to reference and back up your work properly.

Week 5- Information Management

Lecture
Week 5 lecture was all about how to manage the information you gather in a easy and quick way. We can use the computer as a way of processing information in the ways of data, pictures and web pages. There are two types of formatted information which can be used. The first one is atom-based which is books, papers, reports, etc. The pros to using atom-based information is the fact that you can see it and you know where it is. It is also difficult to change and copy which helps in the area of copyright and plagiarism. The cons to atom-based info is the bulkiness and costly prices of gathering atom-based information. Its also hard to edit and difficult to copy.

The second form of information is bit-based which is digital reproductions and electronic content. The pros to using bit-based info is that it is very flexible and very cheap. Easy to edit and mass produce. The cons to it is the privacy and the authenticity.

Some good changes from atom to bit is email, the internet, music(mp3) and TV (foxtel IQ).

In summary 5 good ways of organsing and retrieving information are to have file extensions, folders/directories, creat metadata, search function (OS) and search engines.

Worskhop
Part A. In the week 5 workshop class we were told to get straight into our workshop tasks. The first task was to read this PDF text file www.inette.com/aibtinette/favouritesl.html about creating favourites on your internet webpage. We then were asked to step up a favourites list that has 3 folders in it, each with atleast two websites marked as favoutires. Here are screenshots of the three favouite folders.

Part B. We were asked to write a short review about the pros and con's of atoms and bits using the information given. http://archives.obs-us.com/obs/english/books/nn/bdcont.htm.

The balance of Pros and Con's with Atom and bit-based information.
There is an abundant amount of pros and cons to both atoms and bit-based information which can be discussed and debated forever. As each year goes past the demand for more atom- based info to convert into bit-based info is outstandingly huge. This leads to there being many more pros about bit-based information and more cons about atom-based information. An example of this is the use email (being a bit-based info source) over the atom-based info of writing a letter. The fact that with a atom you can actually see it and feel it is a pro in itself, will always have that over bit info. With the worry of copyright and plagiarism atom-based info is much harder to copy or change info of your work.
On the other hand bit-based info is so much more flexible with it being cheaper and usually quicker. The use of bit-based info can enable you to mass produce and broadcast information. An example that could be used is a book, which is an item of information(atom-based) that is light-weight and easy look through. On the other side actually getting the book in your hands includes shipping and inventory. With that in mind a book will also at some stage go out of print, while digital books will always be on the internet or webpage.
The balance between atoms and bit-based information and their pros and cons are close. Although i can see in the near distance future, atoms will be a thing of the past in some areas of information e.g. book libiries just being online.

Week 4- Communications

Lecture
Week 4 lecture was on communications and different components we have now then 20 years ago. The role of ICT (information and communication technology) can be individual, with or without an organisation, within a business or all of the above. Communications takes place within networks which can be chain networks, circle networks,wheel network and all channel network. The main group point that we gathered was the four types of communications. 'Place' dependent synchronous where you are somewhere at the same time and place with someone e.g. chat room. 'Place' dependent asynchronous which is different time but same place e.g. bulletin board. 'Place' independent synchronous which is same time, different place e.g. msn messenger. Finally 'place' independent asynchronous which is different time and place e.g. email.
We looked at examples of ICT e.g. emails, instant msg and blogs. Also how to use these tools for personal and study reasons.

Workshop
In this weeks workshop we taught on the use of our communication skills. The aim of this class was to gather a variety of tools to communicate with group members (e.g. face to face meetings, emails and bulletins). The first task was to create 4 different folders in our email account with the headings UPC0001, UPC 0002 and so on.

We also were told to look up on Google under the icon 'group' a topic that interests us. I looked up swimming and then choose a group with the title 'burning calories with swimming'. The icon 'groups' on Google allows you to write a question that you are struggling with in a area of a topic and someone experience in that area replies back and answers your question. It seemed a very smart tool to answer tough questions you don't know about a topic.

The final area we looked into was podcast and the advantages for it being available for all university lectures. I think it would be great have podcast, because if you miss a lecture because of work, sickness you can go through the notes but also catch up by listening to the pod casts and listening into extra notes. Also alot of the notes uni students write down are notes that are said by the lecturer and not whats already on blackboard. It would be a great tool for uni students.

Readings-
Guide to using Email - Reading 1 part 1 is all about the do's and dont's of emailing and ways to make your message more efficient and effective. One main point was to make sure that email is the right communication tool for the job. Also getting to the point early in the email and if asking a question to actually ask the question. Be careful with grammar and always ask if you need a response or not. Finally when receiving a email, don't make any assumptions about the sender's emotional state. Part 2 of reading 1 was about helping avoid common pitfalls when composing your messages. One big fall in writing a email is to select a appropriate tone to your email, that will suit and relate to the topic or discussion. The final thought on part 2 was depending on the topic of email avoid Irony and Sarcasm.

Chat Room Primer- IRC (Internet Relay Chat) is a way of communication over Internet to real people all over the world. EFnet is an example which has over 12,000 different channels (topics). This gives the viewers options to where and which channel they would like to pick.

The Problem with SPAM - This reading is all about the title name. Spam is a problem that is getting out of hand. With it being free for senders to send and problem is has with viruses. The reading tells you ways to prevent spam and help stop it. This could be helpful reading for all Internet and email users.

Week 3- Presentation Strategies

Lecture
The lecture was mainly focused on how to present your work verbally in oral presentation. We focused on three types of presentations: Self-contained presentations, written presentations and oral presentations. The main point that was gathered was that a visual message is not a enough on its own. The audience will remember 10% of what they see, 25% of what see and hear, 40% of what they see, hear and write down and 60% of what they experience interactively.
There were four steps that in the lecture the lecturer wanted to cover. They were that we would structure our presentation correctly, preparation for a presentation, use audio/visual tools in your presentation, and audience involvement.
The three main areas in a structured presentation is a introduction, body and conclusion. With the introduction you really would want to engage the audience early and with a joke or statement to introduce your topic or thesis. The body covers the main areas of the topic and the connective devices to want your saying. Final with the conclusion you want to re-assert/reinforce the thesis and review the main points. Then concluding with a effective closing.

If your going to use visual/audio effects in your presentation make them professional and useful to your thesis. Test all your video and audio effects to see if they work (before your presentation). The most and common presentation program is MS PowerPoint, which is a really easy but effective tool for any oral presentation.

Workshop -
We began to design a six slide presentation on a topic or on ourselves. The presentation was done on MS PowerPoint and would need a introduction, body and conclusion. We also needed to come up with 5 strategies to help layout a well presented oral.

Here are my 5 strategies:

Plan: Plan and find your topic, gather information and articles on your topic start writing notes. Structure: Structure out your presentation using the three main areas in a presentation which are the introduction, body, and conclusion.
Practise: Once you have structured and designed your presentation begin to run through the presentation and practise it by yourself or in front of friends and family.

Workshop MS PowerPoint presentation task :

Readings:
Oral Presentation Advice- The reading gave you an overview of what to think about when writing and presenting a oral. Thinking about the audience and rhetorical goals were a few of the areas that was covered. The Reading showed 3 different outlines of a structured presentation. The first on was a generic conference talk which is a great outline for a talk with a well planned out structure. The talk is based around the PowerPoint and each PowerPoint goes for about 2 mins, so there is about a dozen for a 2o min talk. The next stlye of talk is the academic interview talk which is alot different to a conference talk. The goal of a interview talk is too get a job, where a conference talk is getting people interested in your paper or work. The last group is other talks, which is for any other talk but using the same structure as the other groups. It also had a area on how to give a bad talk. Very interesting information that could help any level and form of talk.

In this weeks lecture we spoke on the common PC tasks that as a uni student we should equip and understand. There are 7 main areas in common PC tasks (with main applications for each area).

File handling - window explorers
Word processing - Microsoft Word
Spreadsheet - Microsoft Excel
Presentations - Microsoft PowerPoint
Internet Access - Internet Explorer
Emails - Outlook Express
View PDF's - Adode Acrobat Reader

We also learnt that for this course will we need and will acquire:

Word Processing and Presentation skills to develop well presented assignments.
e-mail skills to communicate effectively with your lecturer, tutorial leader and other students.
Internet/browser skills

Workshop
In class today we assigned to finish two exercises regarding using and working with Microsoft word and excel.

We were giving instructions on how to complete the tasks.

Microsoft Word Exercise 1-

I found the first exercise on Microsoft word rather straight forward with following the instructions. Here are two screenshots of Exercise 1:

These were very useful exercise and teaches you new applications but also refreshes you on some older materials that i was rusty with.

Readings -

Using MS Word for APA Tasks-

This reading was a step by step text that helped you use Microsoft word to its fullest. This guide uses tools that an everyday uni student will need and use to be up to university standards. Line spacing, alphabetize reference list and page headers were a few of the sections in this reading.

Graphic File Formats-

The reading was about the different types of formatted pictures and where to use what. The list of formats are as followed:

Week 1- Personal Computing

Lecture
This weeks lecture was gathering information on the introduction of this course and giving us some basic outlines on computer skills and the understanding of the basic computer. We learnt about the new technologies and applications that will need to under go and the equipment we need for this unit. We also learned about the ecu on-line simo system and the blackboard application.

Week 1 workshop was an introduction and overview of what the unit will cover and entail. logging on/off the computer, using windows vista and other programs. Started creating our bloggers and used all the notes from blackboard which we learnt about aswell. We went through the basic steps one by one on designing your our blog and how to use blogs. We also touched on screen shoots and imageshack.

The reading on PC lube and tune is all about a service station that gives the comptuer users of the world access to useable introductions, tutorials, and education on technical subjects. Articles in PCLT are freely available for network browsing by individuals, although copying, printing, redistribution, commercial, or corporate use is prohibited without a license.

This reading has many text relating to how to manage, control and know your computer and its hardware. Some of the main texts relate to high speed communications, How to plan, partition, install, and remove DOS, OS/2, NT and an introduction to PC hardware.
